The group of single parents exprience poverty. The can be because the other parent refuses to pay child support or the parent is forced to work long days at jobs where they make close to nothing anyway just so that the children have a decent life and the amount of money going out is more than whats coming in . But this can also be a bad thing for the children when they are younger and living with a single parent because they never get to see their parent and they don’t get the same support as a parent that sees them more. The parent is working to make ends meet in a time now that things are just escalading up in price and becoming way too expensive to afford. This can be in all ages or genders. But primarily people just belive that the women are the single parents but this isn’t always the case. This can happen all over the place and it is not just subjected to a certain part of the city or country. Not having enough money at the end of the month or such to pay bills is a big problem right now. Renting a place is just so high that its really hard to find a cheap, decent place now a days. Working long hard days just to make the ends meet can be very tolling on the parent. It is hard to overcome poverty anywhere. It’s a cycle that takes a lot just to get out of. But there is social assistance where they can get money to assist in survival. For the parents that may be disabled and single this can be hardship. They not only have to take care of themselves differently they also have children that may be dependant which can cause problems. But there is programs or assistance to help them out and have a normal, happy life.

I believe that it is important to advocate the rights for children because they really don’t understand or get the rights that they have. Children don’t deserve to be suffering in pain. Children don’t have the power to fight for their rights like we do. For the children in developing countries its a really sad situation because anything that they do they are most likey to die because of preventable causes. Children don’t really know what they need so people like us need to help make important decisions for them so they don’t end up ill or dead. They need people that are more educated on these rights so that children aren’t suffering. Organizations like Free the Children and UNICEF are there to help children and engate them in the social issues of their country. They help educate the children with raising money for schools, teachers, and supplies to help them develop better. These organizations are an awesome way to show that people do care and want to help. Children make up a huge amount of the population and they are the future.

The Plight of Afghan Woman

The vast majority of Afghanistan’s population professes to be followers of Islam. Over 1400 years ago, Islam demanded that men and women be equal before God, and gave them various rights such the right to inheritance, the right to vote, the right to work, and even choose their own partners in marriage. For centuries now in Afghanistan, women have been denied these rights either by official government decree or by their own husbands, fathers, and brothers. During the rule of the Taliban (1996 – 2001), women were treated worse than in any other time or by any other society. They were forbidden to work, leave the house without a male escort, not allowed to seek medical help from a male doctor, and forced to cover themselves from head to toe, even covering their eyes. Women who were doctors and teachers before, suddenly were forced to be beggars and even prostitutes in order to feed their families.

Since the fall of the Taliban in late 2001, many would agree that the political and cultural position of Afghan women has improved substantially. The recently adopted Afghan constitution states that “the citizens of Afghanistan – whether man or woman- have equal rights and duties before the law”. So far, women have been allowed to return back to work, the government no longer forces them to wear the all covering burqa, and they even have been appointed to prominent positions in the government. Despite all these changes many challenges still remain. The repression of women is still prevalent in rural areas where many families still restrict their own mothers, daughters, wives and sisters from participation in public life. They are still forced into marriages and denied a basic education. Numerous school for girls have been burned down and little girls have even been poisoned to death for daring to go to school.

- by Abdullah Qazi

http://www.afghan-web.com/woman/

I think that no matter wheither you are female or male, you should have the same equal rights. Its not fair in this case where women aren’t allowed to leave the house and litterly be slaves to their husbands, fathers, or brothers. I think that its great that they have changed the laws a bit so that women could return back to work if they chose, the no longer are forced to wear the covering burqa. Even though they may have more rights then before there is still problems in the rural ares. women have been allowed to return back to work, the government no longer forces them to wear the all covering burqa. But there is still problems in the rural areas where women are still forced to do these things where still their marriages are arranged and they are still denied right to education. I believe that a big problem is education. Education is the right path to get out of situations and lack of education i think is kinda of a way for the country’s government to keep its people in the country. Education is the key, without it you aren’t taught your rights, aren’t being safe, and you don’t know any better from what others tell you. I think that this is a big problem. I feel very thankful and appreciative of being able to live in a country where I can getup every morning and know that either I’m going to school or going to work. I think that fact that I have an education and I’m able to express myself the way that I want to. I feel thankful for the last 13 years I have be given the oppertunity to attend school and get an education to better my life later. I just wish that all the other countries that are lacking in this great thing can see how good rights for people are a good thing.

On a global and local scale I feel that my personal beliefs don’t have a effect on others. Everyone has their own beliefs and are entitled to these. No one can change people’s beliefs so knowing what your beliefs are is a good way to understand the beliefs of others around you. Everyone deserves the right to express their beliefs weither this is in their sexual orientation or ethnicity. Everyone’s values are different, mine are completely different from yours. Just because you value something different from someone else doesn’t mean that someone else’s are wrong, they just value things differently. Equality should be given out no matter their age, race, gender or ethnicity. I won’t put someone down because they have a different belief than me. I may disagree with it but I will not judge someone based on this. Like before everyone has their own values and beliefs and are entitled to these, and the key to being open to others beliefs are to know your own and know what values and beliefs really are.

I agree. I believe that Alex Sanchez is trying to say for the people that are straight it hurts them in a way that they are not open to accepting those that may have this different sexual orientation. I know that when I was a little younger and wasn’t open to accept people who were gay. To mean I thought that it was wrong, now that I’m older and have been more exposed to this sort of thing I have become more open to it and not think it is wrong because it’s not. For the straight people I think are hurting themselves by not opening their minds to become aware that this is how people want to live their lives. Its not our choice it’s theirs. We can’t change someones likes and dislikes, people like or dislike them for a reason. For those who are gay it hurts them to hear the nasty comments straight people say to them or around them. It hurts them to be looked down upon because they like someone of the same sex. Just because they chose a different way of life doesn’t give straights the right to beat on them physically, mentally, or emotionally. I think that LSS could create a club that brings awareness to this issue and open the minds of people and the different types of people. We can’t change the minds of people who only believe that only a man and woman is supposed to be together, but we can try to open their minds and stop the bashing that all non-accepting people does.

VANCOUVER — Shootings in Metro Vancouver used to occur almost daily — now they are happening daily. For the fifth straight day, shots rang out, this time in the suburban city Coquitlam, RCMP Cpl. Peter Thiessen said Saturday. “It’s just turning into one day after another that police in general in the Lower Mainland are responding at a significant level to these shootings,” said Thiessen. “It’s not clear what the dispute was over.” He said some young men got into an argument near a restaurant Friday night and one man went to a vehicle, got a handgun and fired between eight and 12 shots at another group of young men. He said one bullet went through the window of a neighbouring residence and lodged in a wall. Nobody was injured in the home or from the shooting by the unidentified male. The suspect and several other males fled in a dark-coloured SUV.When police reached the scene, “everybody had fled from both sides and there was just a large number of shell casings remaining at the scene.” “Certainly it’s another example of how quickly firearms are being utilized in these types of disputes involving young, 20-something men.” There are no suspects and Thiessen said it’s not clear if the shooting was gang-related. He expressed the concern that is likely foremost in the minds of many members of the public. “How many 20-something young men are driving around with handguns in their vehicles for one purpose or another, whether they are associated to gang activity or not?” The Friday night shooting followed an admission Thursday by Vancouver city police that they have an all-out gang war on their hands. The admission came as they announced the arrests of two alleged gang leaders. Police say the men were arrested as part of a crackdown on a drug turf war that has turned the southeastern sector of Vancouver into a “battleground,” involving more than 100 shootings in recent years. While area police forces have previously steered clear of using the term “gang war,” Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu made it clear that’s what police and the public are up against. “As police, we’ve always been told by media experts to never say or admit that there is a gang war,” said Chu. “Well, let’s get serious. There is a gang war and it’s brutal.” There have been 31 shootings in the Metro Vancouver region since late January, 12 of them deadly. Shots have been fired every day since Monday somewhere in Metro Vancouver.

Im my opinion this is not a world that I want to live in, where I have to be careful because who knows if where I am is where gang members are. Its really shocking to here that there has been so many shootings in one area like Metro Vancouver region where since January 12 there has been 31 shootings where 12 of them were deadly. We have come to a crazy and diffcult kind a society where everyone thinks that killing seems to slove all problems which in reality it doesn’t. Is there no remorse for killing some innocent person because of one stupid or crucial decision they made long ago is now the actual cause of death. You really have to watch your back these days. In this article a man got into an argument near a restaurant and the one man went to the car, got a handgun and fired between eight and 12 shots at another group of young men. I truely don’t understand. You have to be careful. I really wouldn’t want to piss off a gang memember when driving because who knows he could have a handgun with him and then what I’m dead. This is scary stuff. 1st Point of View:

For gang members this had become a way of life. For the person who is being hunted down and killed because he didn’t pay for drugs or do something that they were supposed to do, should they really be just killed. This is how gangs react and it’s probably the only way that they can think of a solution to a problem. If I was in a gang I would live my life just the same as those that do now. Shootings that deal with “turf” collection are really stupid way of getting it. I may not understand what is like to be in a gang but with whats going on right now I’m really glad that I’m not.

2nd Point of View:

As a member of the public I’m not quite sure why all of this happens. What about the families that this effects. How would they feel to hear that their child was shot. What about the innocent people who are in the right place at the wrong time? But unfortuantely we aren’t going to see anything being done until our judical system learns that slaps on the hands are not effective at all. The war of shootings and crimes that gangs commits is not going to stop. I find it astonishing that someone could get a gun and just shoot them over drugs or “turf”. I also feel sorry for those families whose children chose a life of crime and drugs which slowly creeps up on them and then boom they are dead. I honestly don`t see a change going to be made quite yet.

Vancouver homeless population may triple by 2010

Updated Thu. Sep. 21 2006 10:00 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

Vancouver’s homeless population is growing at such a fearsome rate that it could triple to 3,000 people by the time visitors arrive for the 2010 Olympic Games, says a report released by an advocacy group Thursday.

"Without immediate action, the estimated 2.3 million visitors who come to our city to see the Olympics will find a Vancouver in the midst of an urban epidemic of poverty," said Pivot Legal Society spokesman David Eby as he released the report.

The burgeoning homeless population would be "clear evidence of a broken commitment to address the impact of the 2010 Olympics," Eby said.

When Vancouver bid for the 2010 games, federal, provincial and municipal governments pledged to protect the city’s rental housing and ensure no one would be left homeless because of the Games.

The city estimates that about 1,200 people currently sleep outside without shelter on a nightly basis.

"We have three years left," Eby said. "Now is the time to grab those opportunities."

Pivot, a non-profit group that develops advocacy campaigns for marginalized people, said the crisis can be averted if existing low-income housing is preserved or replaced. Between June of 2005 and June this year, the city lost more than 400 low-income rooms due to closings of hotels, conversions or rent increases.

Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan didn’t argue with the advocacy group’s findings.

"It’s a civic, and provincial and national shame," Sullivan told CTV News. "We need to do better and I am working on some initiatives to work with the federal and provincial governments and even to bring in private sector funding.

“I’m committed to that,” Sullivan said.

Pivot says the city needs 800 new units every year to keep up with the demand, and is calling on the province and city to provide a three-part solution:

provide money for more low-cost housing

raise welfare rates and

force building owners to repair and improve their low-income units by enforcing existing city bylaws

A room in the Burns Block of Vancouver’s downtown east side was home to Veronica Crow Eagle for eight years. It wasn’t a home she was proud of. People urinated on the floor of her shared bathroom and garbage, including used hypodermic needles, piled up in the public spaces.

But the 61-year-old, who suffers from arthritis and a painful intestinal inflammation called Crohn’s disease, was hard pressed to find replacement lodging when the building failed a fire safety inspection. She and the other tenants were forced onto the street.

Crow Eagle, who has found a new place to live, considers herself lucky.

“Most of the rents run $400 to $465,” she said.

Not everyone can afford those rates. The standard shelter allowance for welfare recipients is $325 dollars a month. The rate hasn’t increased in 12 years.

“There’s hardly anyone who’ll give you a rent for $325,” said Crow Eagle.

Garvin Snider, who has lived and worked in Vancouver’s downtown east side for four years, said he’s watched the number of homeless grow without a matching increase in social housing.

“Transit costs, food costs, every cost has gone up,” but not welfare rates, he said. “People are struggling to meet basic needs of everything here — everything.”

Salvation Army shelters turn away as many as one out of every four people every night because there aren’t enough beds.

“We wish that we could work with everybody and provide shelter spaces for everybody,” said said Salvation Army Capt. John Murray. “But the reality is that the economics and practicalities … make it very difficult.”

During peak season in winter, the network of Salvation Army shelters provides beds for 500 people.

“That’s an extraordinary amount,” Murray said, “when you consider we’re one organization trying to reach out and respond to the needs of people coming to our doors.”

With a report from CTV’s Mike Killeen and Janet Dirks in Vancouver

This problem of homelessness is a big problem for the DTES (Down Town East Side). The problem is big because of all the houses that are being “renovated” for the 2010 Olympics to attract people to the east side. As an eye-witness of what a huge problem this is kind of getting out of control. The people that are living on the streets right now because of the high cost of living. Yes the buildings that they are putting up that are going to apparently help with the homelessness are only going to cause even more people on the streets because the cost of these new houses are going to rise high. These Olympics are only going to benefit the more “privileged” and not really help the homeless. Should this problem be like thrown under the rug for a 2 week event. Sending them to places where they can find a lower rent to places like Langley, Surrey, Richmond and this becoming no longer E Vancouver’s problem and now ours. We aren’t going to get away from this issue… its going to be here after the Olympics just as it is now before the Olympics.
